Description
There are many different types of wire & cable used in the industry, mainly we broker wire & cable used in electrical utility transmission and distribution circuits.
Some examples are : ACSR, ACSS, AAC, AAAC, bare copper, XLPE copper, guy strand, guy wire, galvanized steel guy wire, medium voltage primary underground distribution or high voltage power cable, RWU, XPLE concentric neutral, duplex, triplex, quadruplex service drop cable, etc. There are also many different sizes, commonly they are sized in either AWG or kcmil / MCM.
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is the standard way to denote wire size in North America. In AWG, the larger the number, the smaller the wire diameter and thickness. The largest standard size is 4/0 or 0000 AWG, and 40 AWG is the smallest standard size. Common size range for utility use is #6AWG - 4/0AWG.
MCM is an abbreviation for thousands of circular mils, an old measurement of wire gauge. 1 MCM = 1 kcmil = 0.5067 square milimeters. A mil is 1/1000 inch. A wire 200 mils in diameter is 40 MCM. MCM is generally used for very large-diameter wire. The size range for utility use can go from 266.8 kcmil all the way up to 2515.0 kcmil.
ACSR – Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced is used as bare overhead transmission cable and as primary and secondary distribution cable. ACSR offers optimal strength for line design. Variable steel core stranding for desired strength to be achieved without sacrificing ampacity. ACSR can range from 6AWG (ie. 6 Al strands, 1 steel), to 266.8 kcmil (18 Al all the way up to 2515.0 kcmil. (ie. 76 Al strands, 19 steel)
